Sabina's Story

For Sabina Chazanas, Founder and President of LaNatura, "natural" and "organic" are more than just trendy buzzwords – they have been a way of life since she was a little girl growing up in the idyllic southern Italian village of San Ferdinando di Puglia “ the Tuscany of the South " an agricultural area known for such staples of Mediterranean cuisine as olives, grapes, wine and a cornucopia of fruits, herbs and vegetables, hosting many food and wine festivals.

Her grandfather taught her that the fruits of the earth were not just delicious food. They were also the secret to beautiful skin, hair, and overall health and well-being. Olive oil was used to moisturize skin and hair, as well as to heal cuts and burns, as it had been since the days of the Roman Empire. On long bicycle rides through the countryside, he would help her pick wild herbs like chamomile and mint, which would be used in rinsing the hair and soothing upset stomachs. Fresh sea salt from the Adriatic coast, rich in calming trace minerals, would be just as likely to grace the bath as the dinner table. These childhood experiences made an indelible impression on Sabina: one that would shape her destiny forever.

Relocating to England, she was determined to pursue a career in health and beauty. She trained as an esthetician at London's prestigious Arnould-Taylor Therapy College and worked with cosmetic giants Revlon and Clinique in sales and marketing. While she was a Senior Consultant at Clinique, she spearheaded the launch of the Clinique brand in South Africa. The late, great Estee Lauder was a close associate and personal mentor.

Armed with the invaluable experience of nearly a decade in London, in 1981 Sabina decided to "cross the pond" and venture out on her own in business. She brought her lifelong passion for natural skin and body care to Los Angeles by opening a retail store – not surprisingly called LaNatura. She searched high and low for only the highest quality products featuring natural ingredients from the world's most exotic locales to sell in her new store. She was a pioneer in marketing such luxury brands as Annamarie Borlind, Aveda, and Dr. Hauschka. As luck would have it, LaNatura was located next to a famous destination health-food store, and curious passers-by wandered in to check out Sabina's well-appointed and inviting establishment. Word spread quickly among the local cognoscenti, tastemakers, and trendsetters –but it was Hollywood that really took notice of Sabina and her blossoming beauty business. Movie stars like Julia Roberts and Drew Barrymore, mega-recording artists like Madonna and Lionel Richie, and other notable celebrities all became enthusiastic repeat customers of LaNatura, and referred their friends to one of the town's best-kept secrets. National magazine and newspaper articles followed. Even then-President Bill Clinton and Hillary Clinton enjoyed LaNatura products in the White House!

By 1990, the success of her establishment led Sabina to launch her own collection of LaNatura skin and body care products, using her own formulations, developed over years of intensive research. She knew she could do it better by producing them herself. With the help of her architect husband, Alex, and a business plan written on a restaurant placemat, they launched 20 products, including massage oils, body lotions, bath salts, and hydrating mists. These products were made then, as today, with the purest natural ingredients available. LaNatura opened its second location, in Beverly Hills, in 1993. Their customer base remained loyal - eagerly purchasing the new product line and touting it to their friends. Soon, top-tier luxury hotels, resorts, and spas, including The Four Seasons, Ritz-Carlton, La Costa, Georges V Paris, Terranea Resort – to name just a few - came calling, and engaged LaNatura to do private labeling of its products for their properties. In addition, the company did private labeling for Bare Escentuals, and supplied LaNatura brand products to the Origins stores (owned by Sabina's ex-boss, Estee Lauder). Impressed with the burgeoning brand, Johnson and Johnson also retained LaNatura to consult on product development.

Today, LaNatura is a thriving skin and body care products company; its founders were awarded the Independent Cosmetics Manufacturers and Distributors (ICMAD) Cosmetic Entrepreneur of the Year Award for 2002. The business became successful enough that Sabina's husband, Alex, left his practice to become a full time Special Projects Manager. Their 15 -year-old daughter, Carina, serves as "a junior" Creative Director, bringing the power and energy of the youth market to new product development. Carina created and developed "Juicy!" an exciting line of luscious lip balms in a mouthwatering assortment of natural food-grade flavors.

Sabina's obsession with bringing the best of nature to skin and body care products continues to be the driving force behind LaNatura.

looking forward:

We listen intently to our customers' suggestions; this has always driven our product development throughout LaNatura's history, and will continue to do so in the future. This enables us to be innovators and trendsetters within the global skin and body care industry. We are constantly striving to become a 100% certified organic company.

LaNatura is always on the vanguard of cosmetic and bodycare innovation, and plans to diversify into several new and exciting product lines.
